Walter comes from a poverty stricken farmers background, and he often misses school due to having to help on the farm. He never has any shoes, has ringworm and never has lunck withhim or money for lunch. However, he is a proud boy and his presence teaches scout a few life lessons.

The Ewells are basically white trash. They live down on the dump sponging off society. They are as poor as the cunninghams, but the cunninghams refuse charity-preferring to work for their keep (the opposite of the Ewells) The Ewells are a law unto themselves and the book refers to physical and perhaps sexual abuse by Bob Ewell…whilst the cunninghams are generally known as nice decent folks.
